Fall 2009 Come Around
Williamsburg, VA

27 September 2009
Here's the After Action Report from Walt Baskin following the Williamsburg Come Around:

WILLIAMSBURG, VA COME AROUND AFTER ACTION REPORT

The Come Around was held Sept. 21-27, 2009 at the American Heritage Campground in Williamsburg.

Attendees were: Firsties Walt & Chris Baskin ’59; Joe Jaap ’60; Bob & Emma Hofford ’61; Denny & Nancy Sloan  ’57; Vic & Faye Sharpe ’48; Jim & Marie Roberts ’59; Lee & Rosemary Hebbard  ’53; Paul & Darline Roush ’57; Hank & Stevie Giffin ’67; John & Bea Christensen ’57; Dave & Lynn Cannon ’53 and  Joe & Vicki Hansen ’65.  Joe Jaap and Paul & Darline Roush commuted from their Williamsburg homes to Come Around functions and Lee & Rosemary Hebbard stayed at a membership campground nearby. Unfortunately, we had some cancellations close to come around time and lost our discount with the campground (needed at least 10 rigs).

Highlights were:

1st night: Dinner at the campground, catered by The Olive Garden.

2nd Day: Business meeting conducted by Walt Baskin. Main item of interest was discussion about how the RV Chapter might influence the powers that be to improve the USNA Campground so that graduates could make use of it for attending reunions, football games, etc. Several 59ers are staying at the Fort Meade Campground for their 50th Reunion in Oct. because the USNA Campground is unsat. Bob Hofford ’61, a Chapter member,  works for the USNA Foundation in Annapolis and has agreed to represent the Chapter in this effort to improve the USNA Campground.

The meeting was followed by a White Elephant auction, with Jim Roberts ’59 as auctioneer. It was lively, as usual, and raised $47 for the Chapter Treasury. The best moment was the auction of a large Navy goat decal, donated by Bob Hofford ’61 and won by Dave “Red Dog” Cannon ’53. Dave plans to try to put it on the side of his motor home.

3rd Day: Very interesting private tour of historic Jamestown Settlement, arranged by Joe Jaap ‘60.

4th Day: Golf outing arranged by Joe Jaap ’60. Walt Baskin ’59 and Joe were the only participants, but enjoyed playing Joe’s home course at Colonial Heritage.

Paul & Darline Roush ’57 hosted the group for happy hour and a wonderful Bar-B-Q dinner at their lovely home.  Many thanks to Paul & Darline!

5th Day: Tour of the Mariners’ Museum in Newport News, arranged by Bob Hofford ’61. This is a fantastic place! Our 2-hour tour only scratched the surface of the many interesting exhibits there.

That evening we had dinner at The Kitchen Restaurant at Powhatan Plantation. This small restaurant has a Colonial motif and serves great food!

6th Day: The Group enjoyed happy hour and a cook-out at Joe Jaap’s home. We tried to watch the Navy-Western Kentucky football game by streaming video from NavySports.com, but had to settle for their Game Tracker, which was better than nothing. Fortunately Navy won handily! Thanks to Joe for hosting the event.

7th Day: Coffee and fresh doughnuts were enjoyed before ending the Come Around and heading out.

Here is a note from Walt Baskin concerning the upcoming Come Around in Williamsburg, and following the note is the revised POD. Please note that Walt does need some feedback for planning purposes. Enjoy !
                    ----                        ----                         ----
Attached is an updated POD. I will send it separately as text for those who have difficulty opening it (Word Document). Primary changes are that we cancelled the Winery Tour/Lunch on Tuesday, due to few people interested. We added a Chapter Business meeting on Tuesday, followed by a "White Elephant Auction", (conducted by Jim Roberts). We would like to watch the Navy football game together on Sat., which is on the CBS College Sports Channel. Joe Jaap is checking to see if he gets it at his home. Tom Monaghan '59 and his guest, Dianne Carrington, will be attending. Joe & Vicki Hansen '65 will attend the first two days.

Attendees are: Walt & Chris Baskin '59; Bob & Emma Hofford '61; Denny & Nancy Sloan '57; Vic & Faye Sharpe '48; Jim & Marie Roberts '59; Hank & Stevie Giffin '67; John Martin '60; John & Bea Christensen '57; Dave & Lynn Cannon '53; Tom Monaghan '59 and Dianne Carrington; and Joe & Vicki Hansen '65, all of whom are staying at the campground. Joe Jaap '60 and Paul & Darline Roush '57 will be staying at their homes in Williamsburg. Anson & Janet Burlingame '65 will be staying with Joe Jaap. Lee & Rosemary Hebbard '53 will be staying at the Thousand Trails Campground in Williamsburg.

We are leaving home 9/17, so you can contact us by e-mail or cell phone after that. Let me know if you have any questions.

10 July 2009
Received from Walt Baskin this date, more information on the Williamsburg Come Around, and following the letter is a revised POD. Please check it out.
Attached is an updated POD for the Williamsburg Come Around reflecting
Thursday happy hour and dinner at the home of Paul & Darline Roush '57 instead
of a pot luck dinner. Paul and Darline are providing everything, including
beer, wine, soft drinks, Bar-B-Q, salads, desserts, etc. from a reknowned
local restaurant as they have done for years for various class of '57
functions. The cost is $15 per person. Thanks to Paul & Darline for organizing
this!

Darline can buy tickets to Colonial Williamsburg at a discount ($34.50 for a
2-day pass). This is a good deal for non-retired military people. The same
2-day pass for military personnel at ITT offices costs $30.75. When you have a
chance, I would like to know what, if any passes you need (Colonial
Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Water Country, Yorktown/Jamestown, etc.) and your
status (military retiree or civilian), so I can explore the best way for you
to get your passes.

The POD is a Word document. Some of you have not been able to open it, so I
will send a separate e-mail that includes the POD in the body of the e-mail.

I still need feedback from everyone about your plans to participate in the
various activities.

Thanks,

Walt

24 June 2009

Anyone interested in participating in this Come Around, please contact Walt Baskin ASAP and also make reservations at the Campground (American Heritage RV Campground,Williamsburg, 1-888-530-2267, Ask for Jenni and tell her you are in the USNA RV GROUP.)

Christy and Joe Jaap had planned to host the Williamsburg Come Around in Sept. When Christy died suddenly, Chris and I volunteered to take over as Firsties for this Come Around, since it wasn't appropriate for Joe to have to deal with it. So far, the following people are signed up: the Baskins, Joe Jaap, Hendersons, Roberts, Sloans, Sharpes and Giffins. Also the Burlingames, who will probably stay locally, and the Hebbards, who will be in the area at Thousand Trails and plan to participate some. Before spending a lot of time making elaborate plans, I need to know who is interested in coming to Williamsburg as soon as possible! Chris & I have been to Williamsburg many times and enjoy coming back a lot. In addition to the usual things, e.g., daily happy hours, pot luck dinner one night, occasional restaurant meals, golf outing, etc., I suggest that people interested in touring invest in a multi-day pass for Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Yorktown Victory Center, Jamestown, etc. (There are several types of passes that cover different numbers of days and different combinations of attractions, depending on each person's interests. Just google Colonial Williamsburg to check out the kinds of passes that are available and the cost. Military retirees can probably get passes from MWR at one of the bases in the area. I'll check this out soon). Spending a week in Williamsburg lets people spend a few hours a day touring (or none, if they want to take it easy). There is a lot of information about Colonial Williamsburg and the other attractions on line and discounts are available for ticket purchases on line. I expect to schedule a group tour and lunch at the Williamsburg Winery ($28 per person). Chris & I will be away from home til mid-August, so use e-mail or cell phone to contact us after June 27.

12 February 2009
Here's some information from Joe Jaap regarding the proposed Come Around for September 2009:

I have checked with the campground where we held a come around a few years ago. Most were pleased with the campground. If we have 10 or more rigs the rate is $35/ night and use of community rooms is free. If less than 10 rigs probably not a go. We would be one rig.

We would do first dinner at our house (10 minute ride), potluck and happy hours in the community building, dinner at a local restaurant and or at our clubhouse in our compound. Since I work at Busch Gardens I should be able to get discount tickets for those interested in going. Many other things to do in and around Williamsburg.

Probably would schedule one or two events and provide a list of things people can do on their own.

Dates: Sept 21 to Sept 28, 2009

When making reservations tell Jenni you are in the USNA RV group
$35 per night full hook up.
